WHY DO WE LOVE OUR SUMMER READING PROGRAM?
We know it's an exciting time of year when kids and their families are looking forward to all of the fun activities they'll get to experience, but what you may not know is that they'll also experience the "Summer Slide".

WHAT IS THE SUMMER SLIDE?
Although it sounds like a new attraction at a water park, this is actually the name for what happens between school years when kids do not read or work to retain what they learned in school. When they do not read during the summer break, students can potentially lose approximately two months of reading achievement, and this can add up over the years.

HOW CAN I PREVENT SUMMER SLIDE?
By reading just 20 minutes a day, kids will maintain reading skills developed during the school year. They'll also have their own summer-long adventure through stories and imagination.  Encourage your children to pick out their own books including audiobooks and ebooks and take them everywhere they go: in the car, appointments, visits, etc. Listen to books while doing activities. Reading aloud to children helps build vocabulary skills while listening builds both vocabulary and listening comprehension skills.

SUMMER READING FOR ADULTS?
Yes! We know that adults look forward to summer just as much as kids do. Whether relaxing at home, taking a road trip, vacationing, or exploring a new interest, summer is a great time to get lost in the pages of a book and earn incentives along the way.

HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?
Just let the library know when you've read at least 4 books, and earn a ticket into the monthly drawing. There will be challenges weekly for swag bags full of goodies, so stop in or go online to let them know you're reading, and you'll get an entry into the drawings. It's that easy!   The Summer Reading Challenge runs from June 1 through July 31.
